UNESCO-UNEVOC joins the celebrations for International Literacy Day and continues to highlight global changes and improvements in literacy development. The theme for this year is ‘Literacy and Skills Development’.
In 1966, the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed September 8th as International Literacy Day. Since then, International Literacy Day has been celebrated annually to raise awareness and highlight key developments in literacy on a global scale. The topic of literacy is also a key component of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
. Sustainable Development Goal 4 seeks to provide inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
This year’s theme of ‘Literacy and Skills Development’ is particularly relevant to UNESCO-UNEVOC, UNEVOC Network members, and partners working in the field of skills development, given that youth skills development is an integral part of UNESCO’s Strategy for TVET 2016-2021 and UNESCO-UNEVOC’s Medium-Term Strategy for 2018-2020 (MTS-II). This integrated approach of promoting literacy and the development of technical and vocational skills increases the opportunities of youth and adults whilst contributing to better labour market outcomes and more equitable societies.
UNESCO continues to play a leading role in improving global literacy and promoting International Literacy Day in partnership with governments, communities, and experts worldwide. Through its themes and programmes, it aims to highlight the role of literacy and skills development in the context of a changing world.
