OER collections, resources and services with TVET content

In our inventory of OER services we list a wide variety of portals and services with open TVET content. We tried to classify them into 4 different types. Please find short explanations of each of the types below. Note that others may use the terms differently.

1. (Meta) Search engine

OER search engines allow users to search for openly licensed information on the World Wide Web (e.g. google search with a cc-filter applied). Some OER services like OER commons are Meta search engines that allow users to search multiple services and search engines at once, combining the search result in one list.

2. Referatory

OER services that serve as link collection and which refer to resources on different websites are categorized here as “Referatory”. They often add metadata to the resources.

3. Repository

An OER repository is a web service that stores resources, ususally managed by one organization. Users may be allowed to contribute to such repositories.

4. Portal

OER portals are websites that bring information from diverse sources together in a uniform way. Usually, the content as such is not stored on the portal. Some portals allow for contribution of resources and allow users to log in to upload, mix and remix OER. They may also provide authoring tools. In some cases, such services also provide community features to link teachers and bring them together. We use the term portal for services that combine features of the types listed above.
