Formal education of individuals before their first entrance to the labour market, i.e. when they will normally be in full-time education. It thus targets individuals who are regarded as children, youth and young adults by the society to which they belong. It is typically provided by educational institutions in a continuous educational pathway.

General or vocational education and training carried out in the initial education system, usually before entering working life.
