Second International Conference on TVET in the Caribbean

13-15 May 2015, Montego Bay, Jamaica

TVET is high on the political agenda in Caribbean countries. The Second International Conference on TVET in the Caribbean “STEM Education in TVET: Imperative to National and Regional Development” served to establish a platform for reforming education systems and fuel the debate on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in TVET in the region.

The UWI Mona School of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Jamaica, HEART Trust/NTA, University of Technology (UTech) Jamaica, the Caribbean Association of National Training Agencies (CANTA) and the UNESCO Kingston cluster office for the Caribbean, hosted the event.

During the opening ceremony Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC Shyamal Majumdar presented the first prize of the Skills in Action award to TVET student Alia Wedderburn, in the presence of Jamaica’s Minister of Education, the Chairman of CANTA, the Director of the School of Education of the UWI and the Acting President of the University of Technology.

Majumdar also delivered the first keynote speech of the conference on international experiences and good practices in STEM and TVET. On the second day of the conference, TVET expert Katerina Ananiadou presented UNESCO-UNEVOC’s work in the region and more widely in a panel discussion of international development partners on TVET. Two participants sponsored by UNESCO-UNESCO, RMP Jawahar, Executive Director of TREC-STEP, India and Martin Brogg, Director of Curriculum of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, gave inspiring presentations on issues related to STEM in TVET from the perspective of their own countries.

UNESCO-UNEVOC used this occasion to hold a one-day meeting for UNEVOC Centres in the region on 12 May.
