Digital competence frameworks for teachers, learners and citizens

These pages are dedicated to defining and discussing the digital knowledge, skills and attitudes viewed as inherent to being digitally 'competent'. There are two main components to this work:

1) a database of digital competence frameworks. This database provides a global reference point for information on how digital competencies are being defined for citizens, learners and educators through the use of competence frameworks. The content is relevant to all types of UNEVOC Network members (national and international policy-makers, researchers and practitioners).

2) links to articles and think-pieces discussing the many implications of changing digital skills needs on TVET provision:

2 webinars were held on the topic:

The database will be expanded to include digital strategies developed at continental, national and regional level, and occupational digital competence frameworks. Please check back regularly!

SELFIE for Teachers

SELFIE for Teachers is an online, interactive tool to allow teachers to get feedback on how they use digital technology in their work.

GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE: Regional

ORIGIN: European Union 2021

PUBLISHER: European Commission, 2021

BACKGROUND: SELFIE for Teachers was launched in 2021. It is an online self-reflective tool to help teachers to review and gain feedback on how they are currently using digital tools and technologies. Its self-reflection tool is based on the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) and was developed after being piloted with more than 4,000 teachers in five countries.

SUMMARY:

The European Commission's SELFIE tool can be used by any primary and secondary teacher. Teachers answer a series of reflective statements on how they are using , which takes around 25 minutes to complete. Questions and statements are in six different areas of digital competence (linked to DigCompEdu) where technology can potentially be used:

- empowering learners (accessibility and inclusion, differentiation and personalisation, actively engaging learners, and blended learning)

- teaching and learning (teaching, guidance, collaborative learning, self-regulated learning, and emerging technologies)

- assessment (assessment strategies, analysing evidence, feedback and planning)

- facilitating learners' digital competence (information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, content creation, safety and wellbeing, responsible use, problem solving)

- professional engagement (organisational communication, online learning environments, professional collaboration, digital technologies and school level infrastructure, reflective practice, digital life, professional learning through digital technologies, professional learning about digital technologies, and computational thinking)

- digital resources (searching and selecting, creating, modifying, managing & protecting, sharing)

On the basis of their answers, teachers receive an automated report with their results (from ‘beginner’ to ‘innovator’) with suggestions on how they could improve their skills. Teachers completing their self-reflection can receive a certificate and digital badge for taking part. Teachers can use the tool either individually or as part of a team, for example, with a group of teachers within their school or with a team of subject teachers in their region or country.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: SELFIE for TEACHERS can be used in conjunction with the SELFIE tool for whole school digital planning. It gathers views from teaching staff, students and school leaders on technology use. The SELFIE for TEACHERS tool allows for a deeper dive on staff digital skills and the results can be used to identify and prioritise where further training and support is needed.

TARGET GROUP(S): Teachers/trainers
