International TVET focus comes to Moscow

UNESCO-UNEVOC Forum on Europe and North America will highlight youth employment, sustainable development and regional cooperation.

Moscow is the venue for the fourth of a series of five major UNESCO-UNEVOC international conferences on advancing, improving and greening TVET worldwide.

The Europe and North America Regional Forum on “Advancing TVET for youth employability and sustainable development”, which takes place in the Russian capital on 28-30 October 2013, is being jointly organized with Moscow-based UNEVOC Centre, the National Observatory on Vocational Education/Centre for VET Studies, with the support of the Moscow Institute for the Development of Education.

The forum is part of a series that brings together international experts following the Shanghai Consensus priorities identified last year at UNESCO's Third International Congress on TVET.

The Moscow meeting will gather UNEVOC Network members from Europe and America and members of allied international organizations, including the European Training Foundation and the International Labour Organization, researchers and TVET experts.

It will focus on three key areas identified by the UNEVOC Network members as priorities for 2013: how quality TVET can be an effective tool for tackling youth unemployment; the need to integrate green skills in curricula to help promote sustainable development in the workplace; and the value of international cooperation in addressing these challenges.

Youth employment and green skills are important issues that UNESCO-UNEVOC advocates for. According to Shyamal Majumdar, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC's Bonn-based International Centre,

"Young people are the future, and green skills can contribute to safeguarding this future for the next generations. Still too many vocational and technical jobs are in areas where we use a lot of resources. There is a need to find ways to make jobs more environmentally friendly by integrating sustainability in training.

Our UNEVOC Network members are rising to the challenge and finding solutions to address this global task. Some of their promising practices will be presented and discussed at the conference."

Olga Olyenikova, Head of the Moscow UNEVOC Centre, said that hosting a forum focused on Europe and North America made great sense in Russia, where fundamental reforms over the past few years have transformed TVET.

"We are currently in the process of radical changes that include enhancing the relevance of TVET to the labour market, flexible training programmes and better cooperation between TVET schools and employers to foster on-the-job learning.

We are now living in a world where international contacts and exchanges such as this conference are of unprecedented importance and value."
