The Department of Vocational and Technical Education was established in 1993 through the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government Of Ghana. It continued throughout the 2005/2006 academic year with the task of preparing professionally-qualified vocational and technical educators for teaching, supervisory and leadership positions in education, training and the service industry.

The Home Economics Programme, formerly located in the Department of Science Education, moved in to become the nucleus of the new department. The Department continues to offer the B.ED. Home Economics programme with students specializing in either Food and Nutrition or Clothing and Textiles, with Family Resources Management being compulsory. In addition, the Department now offers B.Ed. Communication Design and B.Ed. Fine Arts ( Painting or Sculpture option)programmes. Entrepreneurship training forms a core component of all academic programmes in the Department.

Beyond the traditional academic programmes, the department periodically offer skills development training programmes to train and upgrade skills of men and women in specific trades in order to equip them with relevant skills for the informal sector.
