Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has passed through three transitional levels to become what it is now. The various phases it has undergone so far reflect the GOK’s concerted efforts in promoting technical, industrial, vocational and entrepreneurship education and training in line with the dynamic technological and industrial growth in Kenya and in Africa.

Started as Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME) in 1948 – to provide adequate technical education on Muslim students of East Africa.

Admitted students in 1951 and with emphasis on Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Seamanship and Navigation, and Woodwork. 1966 MIOME become Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI) and started to admit all Kenyans regardless of religion or race. In 1976, it became the 2nd National Polytechnic and developed more market – driven courses

On 23th August 2008, it became MPUC through legal notice no. 160, in an effort to increase access to university education. On 30th January 2013 became Technical University of Mombasa (TUM). TUM has continued to offer TVET programmes because of its status as technical university.
