(CIER)

UNEVOC Centre (Uni/Research) since 2015

Centre for International Education Research (CIER) is one of six research centres in the School of Education, University of Nottingham, currently ranked in the top 30 education research organisations globally and top 3 in the UK. It contains the oldest chair of Adult Education in the UK and the UNESCO Chair in the Political Economy of Education. Its research currently focuses on the current and historical role of higher, adult and vocational education in promoting human development; and the place of education in the global development agenda. Centre members have conducted research in all regions of the world and have worked closely with a range of international organisations, most notably UNESCO.

Mission

The CIER sees education as a site of study for wider, contested, processes such as development, globalisation and technological change. Its members believe that education is a lifelong and lifewide process that should promote social justice, equality, citizenship and democracy. This informs their research, teaching and community engagement activities.

Objectives

The CIER seeks to be an international centre of excellence on the study of post-school education and training and its relationship to international development. It is committed to producing high quality academic research and policy advice, and to practical engagement with post-school institutions and the organisations of managers, staff and students in the sector.

Regular tasks

The CIER carries out research regularly across a wide number of countries and publishes extensively. Its staff, based in England, Malaysia and China, work with postgraduate students focused on a range of countries: Canada, China, England, Ghana, Jordan, Nigeria, Oman, Palestine, South Africa and Uganda (currently). Staff also provide policy advice to a number of national and international organisations.
