Regional Expert Meeting on Promising Practices in TVET and Entrepreneurship Education in the Arab States

Beirut, Lebanon, 19-21 November 2013

Under the patronage of H.E. Professor Hassan Diab, Minister of Education and Higher Education, the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre-Bonn and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education-Beirut, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the General Directorate for Vocational and Technical Education and the Center for Educational Research and Development (CERD), are jointly organizing a Regional Expert Meeting on Promising Practices in Technical and Vocational Education and Training and Entrepreneurship Education in the Arab States in Beirut, Lebanon (19-21 November 2013).

It is the next step in a sequence of activities aiming to address the transformation of TVET and Entrepreneurship Education through regional and international exchange of evidence-based policies and practices within the UNEVOC Network. It also responds to the recommendation of the Third International TVET Congress (Shanghai, 2012) to "expand and enhance the capacities of the UNEVOC Network to play a key role in developing the capacities of decision-makers and practitioners and facilitate the involvement of all stakeholders."

40 TVET experts and policy-makers from 16 Arab Countries and counterparts from UNEVOC International Network (Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America) will participate in the Expert Meeting. Representatives of Lebanese Industrial Association (LIA) and NGOs (i.e. the National Council for Social Services/Social and Technical Institutes and INJAZ-Lebanon) will also be part of the dialogue.

The three-day meeting aims to provide a unique platform for showcasing innovative practices and the sharing of experiences by mapping common challenges and opportunities. Selected promising practices will be presented on three key areas identified in consultation with the UNEVOC Network as priorities for 2013:

  • Youth, employment, and skills-business entrepreneurship;
  • Entrepreneurship education and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs); and
  • Interregional dialogue on transforming TVET for sustainable development.
Similar regional meetings have been held in Costa Rica, Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Moscow. The discussion outcomes and recommendations gathered from all regions will serve as invaluable input to future efforts aimed at strengthening global and regional harmonization for the advancement of TVET transformation.
