Regional stakeholders reaffirm importance of TVET in Cairo

18 to 19 May, 2016

Cairo, Egypt

More than 40 TVET policy makers and government officials from eight Arab States reaffirmed the importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) for socio-economic development during a two-day Regional Forum for managers of TVET institutions. Co-organized by UNESCO-UNEVOC, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), and the National Commission for UNESCO in Egypt, the forum convened participants from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan and Tunisia, including six UNEVOC Centres from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco and Sudan.

The forum aimed to empower the participants to contribute to the development of national and regional TVET policies and strategies, especially with regard to strategies to address youth unemployment. The forum focused on a number of issues, including:

  • Identifying and investing in opportunities to improve TVET at the country and regional levels;
  • Identifying challenges and solutions for the development of TVET;
  • Sharing knowledge and promising practices;
  • Discussing the current guidelines and policy advice developed by international organizations related to TVET.
  • The need to consider both the needs of the labour market and those of youth and adults when considering TVET transformation.
In his capacity as the UNEVOC Regional Focal Point for the Arab States region, Mr Kamal Armanious presented the UNESCO Recommendation concerning Technical and Vocational Education and Training and the UNESCO Strategy for TVET (2016-2021). Mr Armanious also took the opportunity to inform participants about UNESCO-UNEVOC’s online services and products, including the TVeT Forum, World TVET Database, Promising Practices Database and TVETipedia.
