The conference focused on technical and vocational education and training’s (TVET) role in the region and provided a platform for approximately 200 researchers, lecturers and policy makers to share their knowledge and experiences about trends and needs in the region. One of the main outcomes was the recognition of the need to adopt strategies to transform TVET through programmatic interventions and advancing skills to respond to emerging labour market trends and industries.
The conference was organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for TVET (SEAMEO-VOCTECH), the UNEVOC Centre Institute of Brunei Technical Education, as well as RECOTVET, a regional cooperation platform in Asia commissioned by the German Government. UNESCO-UNEVOC, together with the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET) and the Colombo Plan Staff College for Technical Education, provided valuable input on thematic areas including youth employment and entrepreneurship, gender equality and transitions to green economies and sustainable societies. The three priority areas are reflected in the UNESCO Strategy for TVET (2016-2021).
Kenneth Barrientos, Programme Officer, was involved in a plenary discussion on the sub-theme of ‘Preparing TVET Students for ‘Green Jobs’’, and used the occasion to identify job opportunities and demands in eight sectors that are affected by green transitions. According to ILO, up to 60 million jobs are affected by the transition to green economies and societies in the next two decades, and these jobs will require skilled workforce who can support the ongoing shifts in reducing environmental impact.
The discussions stimulated exchanges between TVET stakeholders and reinforced the message to make TVET and skills development a central component in the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community initiatives.
