The term “low-wage worker” is sometimes used to define workers in certain employment sectors – where they perform undervalued labour – by the amount they are paid. Other common terms are “low-skilled labour” or “unskilled worker”. These terms should be used with caution because they imply a negative value judgment regarding the workers’ experience, proficiency and capacity for growth. It also does not take into account that there are a variety of skill levels within the general rubric of “low-skilled worker”, that workers have training as well as knowledge, competency and efficiency in their work.
