The Midterm Review of the Fifth International
Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA V) brought
together over three hundred representatives of Member
States, including ministers and senior-level officials,
and agencies of the United Nations system as well as
non-governmental and civil-society organizations and
academic and research institutions from more than
ninety countries in Bangkok, Thailand, from September
6 to 11, 2003.
As a synthesis of the Review proceedings, this Report
outlines the major issues and key recommendations
which emerged during the six-day meeting. The
participants were unanimous in calling for renewed
commitment, sharing of national and international
resources and creative partnerships in adult learning.
We hope that UNESCO and all stakeholders in adult
education will take our Call for Action and Accountability
to heart in affirming the joy of adult learning.
