As UNESCO’s designated centre for technical and vocational education and training (TVET), UNESCO-UNEVOC supports UNESCO’s Member States in their efforts to strengthen and upgrade their TVET systems. TVET is focused on the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the world of work, and helps youth and adults develop the skills needed for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship while supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
UNESCO-UNEVOC promotes increased opportunities for productive work, sustainable livelihoods, personal empowerment and socio-economic development, especially for youth, women and the disadvantaged. Through its innovative projects, capacity-building programmes and collaborative activities with more than 250 UNEVOC Centres around the globe, UNESCO-UNEVOC is working towards ensuring access to quality skills training and development for all.
The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training is one of 8 UNESCO institutes and centres working in the field of education, and the only organization working to promote the United Nations’ mandate through TVET. UNESCO-UNEVOC also contributes to the United Nations’ mandate to promote peace, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development. Find out more about What We Do.
In 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on Technical and Vocational Education, recognizing that the development of technical and vocational education should contribute to the safeguarding of peace and friendly understanding among nations. Thereafter, an international project on technical and vocational education was initiated and the UNEVOC Network was officially launched in 1992.
At the UNESCO General Conference in 1999, Member States passed a resolution to set up an international centre for TVET. The Government of Germany generously offered to host the centre in Bonn and the inauguration ceremony took place in April 2002. Since then, the UN presence in Bonn has grown to more than 20 organizations and almost 1,000 staff members.
