15-18 September 2014, Winterthur, Switzerland
From 15 to 18 September a Programme Expert from UNESCO-UNEVOC participated in the first International Congress on Vocational and Professional Education and Training, organized by the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER/ Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) in Winterthur, Switzerland. The Congress provided a platform to promote the Swiss vocational training model, targeting an international audience of policy makers, as well as academia and private sector representatives. The key themes of the three-day event were image building, bilateral exchanges between the private sector and policymakers and the presentation of best practices in host companies and vocational education and training schools.
Among the speakers were Jill Biden, Educator and Wife of Vice President of the US Joe Biden, Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labour Organization, and Simon Bartley, President of World Skills International, along with representatives of the private sector and research institutions. Among the 300 participants were representatives from UNEVOC Centres, including HRD Korea, BIBB (Germany) and Institutes and Colleges (Canada).
The presentations and discussions highlighted the need for strong cooperation between the private sector and TVET providers, and the role of image campaigns to make TVET more attractive to young people.
