Media Literacy and New Humanism

In this monograph, media literacy is regarded in terms of its potential for humanisation and fostering the new humanism in order to foster understanding and respect for cultural diversity, encourage intercultural dialogue, and overcome the depersonalising effects of mass technology. The authors consider the concepts of media literacy framework, new media literacy curriculum, including teacher training. In the authors' opinion, new media literacy must ensure the balance between the freedom of experssion and information and the right to information and transparency; linguistic, cultural and geographical balance between dominant communication flows, both in content development; and balance between the values of intellectual property and those of use, between private interests and group or common interests. Adequate implementation of the proposed media literacy strategy should contribute to the education of new citizens and consolidation of the new culture of peace.
