World Youth Skills Day

On 15 July 2019, UNESCO and the UNEVOC Network will join the global celebrations to mark World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) and raise awareness about the importance of youth skills development!

Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults (UN) and continuously face the challenges of greater labour market inequalities. The aim of WYSD is to advocate for skills as an important factor to improve young people’s transitions to decent work, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing today’s most challenging global issues.

This World Youth Skills Day, let us emphasize the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in providing youth with the opportunities to develop their competencies and accelerate their transition to work.

To raise awareness about WYSD, the following events will be held at UN Headquarters in New York:

  • An exhibit entitled “Inspiring youth and improving perception for skills” will be held on 9-18 July 2019 at the Vienna Café Corridor in the UN Headquarters. The exhibit is organized by WorldSkills and UNESCO, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Portugal. Selected photos from the UNESCO-UNEVOC SkillsinAction Photo Competition and "Inspiring Youth in TVET" Story Series will be displayed.
  • Based on this year's WYSD theme of "Learning to learn for life and work", a panel discussion will be held at UN Headquarters in New York on July 15th. This discussion has organized by UNESCO, the Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, and the ILO, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Portugal. The event will bring together the voices of youth, Member States, the UN system, private sector, civil society, academia and organizations.

'Inspiring Youth in TVET’ Story Series

Do you know a TVET student/trainer between the ages of 15-29 with an excellent set of skills that have been utilized for the benefit of the community?

Have the skills been put to creative use or to empower others?

Was it possible to turn a challenge into an opportunity, for instance, by setting up a successful business?

Whether the story is of a trained mechanic or nursing student, a water technician, or an entrepreneur, tell us how skills have been put into practice!

Send us the inspiring story for a chance to have your UNEVOC Centre promoted in celebration of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD). One selected young person will win a trip to attend European Vocational Skills Week in Helsinki, compliments of the European Commission.

This story series will highlight individuals identified by UNEVOC Centres who have shown a positive image of technical and vocational education and training in their community. These young persons can be students, teachers/trainers or graduates of your institution or of institutions which are affiliated with your UNEVOC Centre. You may like to take this opportunity to organize a campaign or a competition to mobilize young people in your institution to share their experiences.

If you are from one of our UNEVOC Centres and want to learn more about this initiative, send us an email at unevoc.skills(at)unesco.org.
