World Youth Skills Day

On 15 July 2019, UNESCO and the UNEVOC Network have joined the global celebrations of the World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) which raised awareness about the importance of youth skills development!

Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults (UN) and continuously face the challenges of greater labour market inequalities. The aim of WYSD is to advocate for skills as an important factor to improve young people’s transitions to decent work, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing today’s most challenging global issues.

The World Youth Skills Day emphasizes the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in providing youth with the opportunities to develop their competencies and accelerate their transition to work.

In celebration of this UN day, the following events were held at the UN Headquarters in New York:

  • An exhibit entitled “Inspiring youth and improving perception for skills” was held on 9-18 July 2019 at the Vienna Café Corridor in the UN Headquarters. The exhibit was organized by WorldSkills and UNESCO, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Portugal. Selected photos from the UNESCO-UNEVOC SkillsinAction Photo Competition and "Inspiring Youth in TVET" Story Series were displayed.
  • Based on this year's WYSD theme of "Learning to learn for life and work", a panel discussion was held at UN Headquarters in New York on July 15th. This discussion was organized by UNESCO, the Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, and the ILO, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Portugal. The event has brought together the voices of youth, Member States, the UN system, private sector, civil society, academia and organizations.

How can you support World Youth Skills Day?

UNEVOC Centres are still encouraged to host their own events in celebration of WYSD. Submissions for the photo competition and story series for this year is over.
