Thematic Priorities of YEM

Promoting youth employment in the Southern Mediterranean region requires skills development in line with the current and emerging demands from the world of work. YEM Project focuses on the following themes.

Skills forecasting and assessment

Through the YEM project, we aim to develop capacities for an effective collection and use of information on skills needs, and turn them into relevant policy actions and programmes. Together with our partners in the countries engaged in the project, we aim to facilitate policy makers and key stakeholders in skills development of the youth in coordinating robust mechanisms for skills forecasting, and developing appropriate TVET programmes to enable the youth to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

Work-based learning

The YEM Project also focuses on improving the status of work-based learning in the region and supporting countries in mainstreaming entrepreneurship skills development and workplace learning modalities, through the provision of policy recommendations and development of dedicated guidelines and materials. The project seeks to build upon international evidence of work-based learning’s benefits in raising enterprise’s productivity and innovation, better career development and improved youth transition.

Digital skills mainstreaming

Digitalization is increasingly influencing labor markets, job profiles and the way countries envision their education and training systems of the future. As part of YEM, we aim to enable digital skills development that equips the learners to respond to emerging demands of new sectors, new jobs, and coping with the impact of technology on existing jobs.

Entrepreneurship skills

While one of the main goals of TVET is to prepare students for their participation in the labour market, many TVET institutions have poor linkages to the world of work. YEM Project reinforces UNESCO's mission of mainstreaming entrepreneurial learning in TVET.

As part of YEM, we are developing a regional mapping of innovative experiences in supporting entrepreneurship, and sharing guidleines to further bolster such initiatives in the region.
