Experts' workshop on TVET teaching with technologies
From 14 to 15 March 2016, 9 Experts, 4 of whom from UNEVOC Centres, met in Bonn, Germany, to provide input to the guiding framework for developing a teacher resource material envisaged to enhance the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teaching and learning using technologies. The workshop took place in Bonn and is part of the project supported by UNESCO and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
Through the project, UNEVOC aims to make available a guide document which will support capacity develop and enable teachers to integrate technologies in vocational training pedagogy and didactics in the different learning settings. The document is envisaged to help expand an understanding, motivation and capacities on the available tools, technologies and resources for TVET. The project is pertinent considering that the use of technologies in TVET does not only require TVET teachers and trainers to be capable of using computer programmes or technology devices in the classroom. Most importantly, the project supports the overall development of TVET teachers and trainers once it will be clear what competencies are necessary to support effective teaching with technologies and what purposes can the use of technologies in TVET serve to improve quality and support the achievement of learning outcomes.
The workshop concluded with a rich set of recommendations that will guide the development of the final output of the project.

UNESCO-UNEVOC recognizes the important role teachers and trainers play in TVET and the ongoing project is but one example of the work UNESCO-UNEVOC does in this regard. For example, at the recent eLearning Africa conference in Addis Ababa in May 2015 on ICTs in TVET, participants discussed the question of how to prepare teachers and trainers to effectively use digital media in TVET.
