Main area of activity:

The primary purpose of the University ITMO is the creation, dissemination, preservation, and application of knowledge in such fields as optics, information science and equipment engineering. To fulfill this mission, the University focuses on priority directions of development in science, technology and engineering. In all of our pursuits, we strive at once for excellence and innovation, recognizing that combination of education and research produces true quality.

In providing education, the University ITMO seeks to promote intellectual potential, development of individual abilities and independent thinking in friendly, competitive, focused, and socially comfortable environment. The University prepares the students to take an active role in any team, and work in competitive conditions paying continuing attention to formation and development of outstanding academic and educational schools.

As a leading research institution, we are focused on world-class fundamental and applied research in priority directions in science, technology and engineering as well as technological innovative research within the framework of state-private partnerships. We do it by promoting intensive mutually beneficial cooperation in Russia and abroad, interaction with other educational establishments, science centers, companies and professional communities.

Our university, being the most important research university in Russia, is an important component of Russian innovation economy. We nurture both a culture of new venture creation and an infrastructure that will support many new ventures.

The St Petersburg University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (University ITMO) is a leading Russian school in Information and Optics Technologies. Currently the University ITMO provides educational services, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, in approximately 35 specializations related to Information and Computer Technologies, Computer Science, Optical Engineering, Physical Engineering, Optical Technologies etc.

The University ITMO has a considerable size with more than 9,000 students and 1,740 teachers, researches and other staff members. The Program of Doctoral Studies of the University ITMO is also sizeable, with more than one hundred PhD theses successfully prepared within the last three years.
