E-learning

Distance learning is a mode of delivering education or training programmes remotely. It does not require a simultaneous interaction between the teacher/trainer and the learner.

Learning that is supported by information and communication technologies (ICT). E-learning is, therefore, not limited to ‘digital literacy’ (the acquisition of IT competence) but may encompass multiple formats and hybrid methodologies, in particular, the use of software, Internet, CD-ROM, online learning or any other electronic or interactive media.

e-Learning is an umbrella term that refers to the use of any digital device or media (multi-media) for teaching and learning, especially for delivery or accessing of content. Thus e-Learning can take place without any reference to a network or connectivity. The digital device used by the learner to access materials need not be connected to a digital network, either a local area network or to the Internet (or even to a cell phone network if a Tablet is used as a terminal or access device).

Instructional model based on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to acquire knowledge, know-how, information, values, skills and competences through the internet.

Comment

In most cases, e-learning refers to a course or programme delivered online;
e-learning uses tools such as educational software, forums, chat or video conferencing;
this term is close to, but not synonymous with: digital learning.

This multilingual glossary (provided in a multitude of European languages) defines a selection of key terms used in European education and training policy. It is a revised and expanded version of the “Terminology of European education and training policy – A selection of 130 key terms” (2014). It considers new priorities of European Union policy, mainly concerning skills intelligence and employment. New definitions have been developed in collaboration with the experts of Cedefop’s departments VET and Skills and VET and Qualifications.
