Work-based learning (WBL)

Learning that occurs in a work environment, through participation in work practice and process, and is integral to vocational education and training (VET).

This glossary is a compilation of Australian vocational education and training (VET) terms and acronyms. It includes both current and historical terms, concepts, acronyms and other abbreviations found in Australian VET research, policy and data.

Instructional model in which the learner acquires knowledge, know-how, information, values, skills and competences carrying out – and reflecting on – tasks:

at the workplace – also known as workplace learning or in-company training – e.g. through internships/traineeships, apprenticeship, alternance training or company visits, job shadowing, etc.; or
in a simulated work environment, e.g. in workshops or laboratories in vocational education and training institutions, inter-company/social partner training centres.

Comment

The aim of work-based learning is to achieve specific learning objectives through practical instruction and participation in work activities under the guidance of experienced workers or trainers.

This multilingual glossary (provided in a multitude of European languages) defines a selection of key terms used in European education and training policy. It is a revised and expanded version of the “Terminology of European education and training policy – A selection of 130 key terms” (2014). It considers new priorities of European Union policy, mainly concerning skills intelligence and employment. New definitions have been developed in collaboration with the experts of Cedefop’s departments VET and Skills and VET and Qualifications.

Learning taking place through carrying out and reflecting on work tasks in a real environment.

This glossary is one output of European Commission project EAC/11/2008, 'Study on European Terminology in Adult Learning for a common language and common understanding and monitoring of the sector'. Two glossaries have been produced in the course of this project. The glossary presented here –the Level 1 glossary –is intended to be a practical reference tool for policy-makers and administrators that will enable better communication between the Member States.[...]
Work on this study was led by the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy (NRDC) at the Institute of Education, University of London, and carried out in collaboration with colleagues from the Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenenbildung (DIE) in Bonn, the Agence Nationale de Lutte congtre L'illetrisme (ANLCI) in Lyon, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Warsaw.
