In accordance with the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, each member is requested to report periodically on its laws and regulations and statistics relating to its educational, scientific, and cultural life and activities. Data for this statistical yearbook are gathered mainly from these reports, but some other sources of information have been consulted. The explanatory text to the tables is presented in English, French, and Spanish, with Russian and Arabic translations in Appendixes F and G. Data tables are grouped into the following categories: (1) reference tables of population; (2) summary tables for levels of education by continent, major area, and groups of countries; (3) education by level and country; (4) educational expenditure; (5) science and technology; (6) culture and communication; (7) printed matter, libraries, and book production; (8) cultural heritage; (9) broadcasting; and (10) international trade in printed matter. Seven appendixes contain supplemental information about member states, school and financial years, statistical publications, tables no longer included in the yearbook, and texts in Russian and Arabic. (Contains 63 tables.)
