This document presents the outcomes of three interrelated efforts undertaken by UNESCO, in collaboration with the technicl staff of the respective countries, to examine the situation of their national educational systems. Part One presents an analysis of the state of education in the region during the 1980-1994 period. Part Two examines student flows and other essential elements. Part Three contains statistical tables that facilitate the evaluation of specific aspects of the situation that prevails in a particular country, and that of the region, subregion or a similar country.
