Un makerspace est plus que ce que son nom l’indique. Dans le centre géré par Gearbox et exploité par MachineANI au Kenya, il existe un grand espace de production utilisé pour fabriquer des articles, mais cela ne représente qu’un tout petit aspect de la fonction du centre : en effet, le projet vise à créer 5 millions d’emplois au Kenya d’ici 2023 dans le cadre du projet Young Africa Works de la Fondation Mastercard et comprend des installations de prototypage partagées, la formation en fabrication, la fabrication et la conception, l’encadrement et des opportunités d’investissement et de développement communautaire.
