Skills in the Tourism Sector in Palestine: Overview of needs after CoVID19

Tuesday, 2 June 2020 from 14:00 to 15:45 (GMT+3)

As part of the YEM Project, UNESCO is working with government agencies, private sector partners and civil society to strengthen national dialogue on future skills needs, and identify employment growth drivers. In this regard, and based on prior activities under the YEM project in Palestine, the tourism sector has been selected to be studied in terms of skills needed for its various jobs as the tourism sector has been the worst affected of all major economic sectors by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Focus and Objectives

The objectives are to:

  • Initiate a dialogue at the policy level with concerned stakeholders.
  • Share knowledge regarding the context of the Hospitality & Tourism sector, including in terms of occupations, jobs and skills needed and undergoing initiatives.
  • Provide a overview of the expected situation and skill gaps after COVID – 19.
  • Expose Youth to this sector in terms of employment and skills needed.
  • Explore what UNESCO YEM project and other projects could propose in this field.
Guiding Questions

  • What is the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism sector and needs of this sector after the crisis?
  • What are the jobs needed in the sector (an overview of the sector)? How can we revive the tourism sector (i.e., hospitality, tourism and travel offices, visitor centers, museums, craft shops, handcraft production, and tourist guides)?
  • What are the plans to respond to the current crisis? What kind of initiatives are taking place to empower the TVET/ Education of youth to respond to COVID 19?
  • What are your suggestions to increase entrepreneurship within the sector?
  • What are the needed youth skills to improve the importance of the sector in the context of COVID-19 (e.g., digital skills)?
  • What is the opinion of youth? What do they need from this sector? Are they aware about it?
  • What can UNESCO and other partners offer? What are opportunities for collaboration?
Participants

Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, international agencies (e.g., EU, ETF, GTZ, Enabel, UNESCO, UNRWA), private sector representatives, Chamber of Commerce, employment and TVET organizations, local and international NGOs working in the field, youth NGOs and youth representatives.
